Hi! I ordered outdoor orchids from you last year. Just wanted to say how great they are doing. Mounted the orchids on the trunk of my tree ferns and about half of the kikis are blooming. Evey-thing you sent is still alive. I have never been able to keep orchids alive indoors but they really like hanging outside on trees.

Bletilla striata
(Chinese Ground Orchid) This clone has been in our family for over 60 years, and is dependable and easy to grow. The 18 inch flower spikes carry up to twelve flowers that measure almost 3 inches across. Starting in late Spring for six or more weeks, the flowers last through rain and cold. This is without a doubt the easiest terrestrial (growing in soil) orchid, suitable for any shady garden.

Common in China, Tibet and Japan - although from the common name one would only think China. In Japan this species is called shi-ran, meaning purple orchid. In China it is known as pai chi.

This species has corm-like psudobulbs and is dormant in the Winter, at which time it can easilly be transplanted.  Ideal in pots, this delicate looking but easy to grow orchid does best when crowded.  The narrow leaves are attractive as well!   Rich, fertile, well drained soil with regular water is a key to success.

These are very full one quart pots that will have multiple floral spikes next year.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Bletilla striata:

#740
Centradenia floribunda Centradenia floribunda

(Spanish Shawl) This is one of these plants that stops most people in their tracks. The deep purple/pink, velvety flowers are show stoppers in and of themselves - but the furry leaves, which start green and mature to a bronze red are unique and unforgettable.
