Masdevallia coccinea alba 'Snowbird' AM/AOS
The very best white Masdevallia coccinea (in our opinion, that is). Tall spikes, very large flowers and growth as strong an non-alba varieties. We even use this plant to grow cut flowers that we sell locally.
Snowbird
is aptly names, as the flowers seem to hover in a flock over a plant. We have grown it in 6 inch clay pots with over 30 2 1/2 inch flowers, on spikes 24 inches high.
Masdevallia coccinea
is perhaps the most widely grown species in this diverse genera. Because of this. a great deal of cultural and habitat information is available. Here is brief summary of the needs of this species:
Light
Bright light in winter, moderate shade (2,000 fc) in the summer. The light should coencide with the plant's rapid growth cycle. This will assist setting bloom spikes for later in the season.
Temperature
These are without a doubt cool growing orchids, coming from elevations of 7,000 to over 11,000 feet in the mountains of Eastern Colombia. The perfect range is 50° to 70° F. Temps to the high 70's, with good shade, air circulation and humidity are doable.
Humidity
Keep cool, moist air moving around the plants at all times. Cool air in the bright light times of the Winter are a real key to success. Try for 55 to 65% RH at all times.
Water
Good quality water low in TDS is very important. Masdevallia coccinea like to be kept moist but not soggy. Remember, they are semi-terrestrial in cloud forest conditions.
Media
We use 3/8 inch quoir with an equil amount of coarse perlite. This mix requires frequent watering. Good quality NZ sphagnum moss works as well.
Here in Northern California this clone blooms heavily in the Spring and early Summer, and sporadically at other times.
These are large divisions, to flower in season, in 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inch plastic pots.
