I received 2 shipments in 2010, total of 8 plants, all salvias. I received large plants per capita and they were growing in an interesting well-drained mix. It contained what looked like tiny bits of clay pots in place of perlite. I highly recommend this nursery based on 2010 experience and future 2011 same.

I recently received my very first order from Flowers by the Sea Nursery in Northern California.
It won't be my last.
I had researched a lot online about Salivas and although many of the more exciting varieties seemed suitable for my climate -- I knew no nursery that grew them -- meaning I would have to try growing them from seed (not exactly my first choice).
Then I found Flowers by the Sea. What a treasure trove of Salvias! The sheer number of Saliva varieties and cultivars offered is almost mind boggling.
Furthermore what impressed me about the FBTS website was the great care and detail they took in presenting their plant offerings and the helpfulness of the information provided.
I placed my order the very next day and received it within a week's time. The shipment of plants was the most expertly packed box I have ever received. Each plant was swaddled in multiple wrappings of heavy packing paper. The plants themselves were in large pots and had substantial top growth.
Needless to say I am totally wowed by this very fine nursery. I look forward to dealing with them again in the near future.

Masdevallia coccinea 'Dwarf Pink' HCC/AOS
A fine, rewarding smaller pink Masdevallia coccinea. In our experience growing this clone (almost 2 decades) we have found it to be very free flowering and more tolerant of warm temps than most coccineas. It grows 8 - 10 inches tall, with flowers above the foliage.  A great choice for small spaces or growing under lights.

Masdevallia coccinea is perhaps the most widely grown species in this diverse genera. Because of this. a great deal of cultural and habitat information is available. Here is brief summary of the needs of this species:

Light

Bright light in winter, moderate shade (2,000 fc) in the summer.  The light should coencide with the plant's rapid growth cycle.  This will assist setting bloom spikes for later in the season.

Temperature

These are without a doubt cool growing orchids, coming from elevations of 7,000 to over 11,000 feet in the mountains of Eastern Colombia.  The perfect range is 50° to 70° F.  Temps to the high 70's, with good shade, air circulation and humidity are doable.

Humidity

Keep cool, moist air moving around the plants at all times.  Cool air in the bright light times of the Winter are a real key to success.  Try for 55 to 65% RH at all times.

Water

Good quality water low in TDS is very important.  Masdevallia coccinea like to be kept moist but not soggy.  Remember, they are semi-terrestrial in cloud forest conditions.

Media

We use 3/8 inch quoir with an equil amount of coarse perlite.  This mix requires frequent watering.  Good quality NZ sphagnum moss works as well.

Here in Northern California this clone blooms heavily in the Spring and early Summer, and sporadically at other times.

These are large divisions, to flower in season, in 2 to 2 1/2 inch plastic pots.
