I received 2 shipments in 2010, total of 8 plants, all salvias. I received large plants per capita and they were growing in an interesting well-drained mix. It contained what looked like tiny bits of clay pots in place of perlite. I highly recommend this nursery based on 2010 experience and future 2011 same.

Got my order this afternoon. Everything was great, much better than I expected. Thanks for the extra keikis. Many of your keikis were bigger and more advanced than some 2 1/2-3 inch potted orchids I've received from other mail-order nurseries at 3 times the price.

Masdevallias
We LOVE Masdevallias.

They are easy to grow, rewarding and mostly very well adapted to growing in small spaces on your windowsill or greenhouse. Coming primarily from the cloud forests of the Andes these diminutive gems love moist, relatively cool and shady places.  Many grow in the tops of trees, bathed contentiously in cloudy mist. If that sounds like to coast of California, then you know one of the many reasons we love these plants.

Cool growing Masdevallia orchids from Flowers by the Sea

For those of you who don't live in a cloud forest, growing some Masdevallias successfully is no more difficult than growing many common orchid genera like Phalaenopsis or Paphiopedilum .  One needs to pay attention to their requirements and avoid plants with needs that can't be met.

We grow these plants in square plastic pots, from 2 to 3 1/2 inches in size.  When we divide the plants, our goal is to make the largest divisions possible.  You can be assured that any Masdevallia you receive from us will be large, full and beyond blooming size.
Masdevallias in our cool greenhouse
All the plants we offer are tried-and-true performers for us, having grown and thrived in a variety of environments.  These varieties are as good for the novice grower as they are for someone rounding out their collection. If you have never successfully grown Masdevallias, give one of the easy and rewarding hybrids a try - Mary Stall or Flying Colors or Pixi Shadow or Dan Harvey. These plants grow and bloom where some of the rare gems (which we truly love and admire but like many of us, can kill at a glance) would just sulk.

Many grow Masdevallias with great success in a cool spot in their kitchen, bathroom or laundry area.  An intermediate greenhouse can be used if there is a cool, shaded corner.

We divide and repot the bulk of our collection in January and February. This allows for fast Spring growth and almost always flowering the same season. We sell only substantial divisions that should bloom this year in season.  We pack them with care, and suggest FedEx Express Saver as the most reliable and cost effective delivery service.

I know you will love these plants as much as we do!
