Winter, spring, summer and fall these plants are beautiful! Bergenia was named for the 18th Century German botanist Karl August von Bergen. A good plant, nearly impossible to kill, it is to some extent under-appreciated in the USA. Its common name, Pig squeak, refers to the fact that the slick leathery leaves will squeak if you rub them.
Bergenia thrive in full sun where summers are not blazingly hot, and have better flower and winter foliege color there. But they do well in bright shade as well, and the variegated leafed varieties like "Solar Flare' and 'Lunar Glow' are best out of the hottest sun.
Give them average soil, moderate water and an annual mulch with an organic compost, and Bergenia may well become one of your favorite plants as well.
