Echinacea, commonly called Coneflower, is a genus of some nine species in the family Asteraceae. All are endemic to eastern and central North America, mostly in the Tall Prairie. Colors range from the common purple to pink, yellow, sunset shades and white. This spring we will offer one of the very first good red varieties, 'Tiki Torch' from our friends at Terra Nova Nurseries.
Some species are used in herbal medicines, and have become common household remidies for immune system boosting. Grow your own cold cure!
The genus name is from the Greek echino, meaning "spiny," due to the spiny central disk. They are herbaceous, drought-tolerant perennials that do very well in most garden watering situations, as long as the drainage is good.
There are literally hundreds of new varieties of Echinacae avaliable, with dozens more being added each year. We offer a few that are easy to grow, rewarding, tidy and that deserve a place in your garden.
