Commonly known as 'Christmas Rose' or 'Lenten Rose', Hellebores are one of the stars of the late winter/early spring garden. Blooming begins in late fall to early winter (November here in Zone 9) and continues until the late spring heat. Seeing these plants bloom right through the snow warms the heart and soothes the soul.
Every garden has a spot for Hellebores, in shady woodlands, in mixed borders or as a gem of a container plant. The new hybrid Helleborus, with exceptionally large flowers and rich, complex color patterns are easier to grow than many of the original species. All of the varieties we offer are vigorous, dependable and nothing short of spectacular in bloom.
Give these plants partial shade, a rich and well drained soil, and plenty of food and water. Minimally, we recommend the incorporation of a generous amount of earthworm castings into the planting hole, with additional slow release organic fertilizer if your soil is not highly fertile. Using liquid feed during the fall, when the plants begin to grow in earnest, and in the spring, when they are in their height of glory, is a very good practice.
And don't forget that Helleborus are fine specimens for large containers. You can bring your plant inside for a few days occasionally to enjoy the blooms close up.
All of our Helleborus plants are Certified Organic large plants, at least two years old and ready to bloom immediately. In fact, fall and winter shipments will often be plants already in bloom. Don't wait long for some of the choicest varieties, as they always sell out quickly in the blooming season.
