Perennials |
 |
|
Herbaceous Perennials are the hottest plants around. Properly cared for, they can be relied upon to provide you with foliage and flowers year after year. Many are very hardy as well, making them most appropriate for colder areas of the country.
So, how in the world do we ever decide which of the tens of thousands of new and old perennial plants to grow? First of all, we look for good growing plants that don't have to be coddled all the time to survive. We kill a few new plants each year in our growing trials, so that you can have a good chance for success. We're looking for those special clones or seed strains that have well above average ability to thrive under less-than-perfect growing conditions. Second, the plant must have real interest. Unusual coloring, an extremely long blooming period, resistance to common pests and diseases.
Lastly, we try to keep within or possibly just close to our specialties: Heuchera, Tiarella, Heucherella, Helleborus, Pulmonaria, Agastache and Salvias. We will seldom be the first nursery to offer a new plant in these categories, as we feel that trialing is a key to your success. But we will over time be your very best source for these plants.
Generally, we are looking for those "Best of Breed" kinds of plants, the ones that turn the head of any gardener. Some of these plants are patented, which means that we must purchase propagation stock from the rights holder. We have chosen to grow many varieties for at least one year to be able to offer you plants that have a greater success factor when introduced into your home and garden.
So look to Flowers by the Sea for new exciting "hot" perennials, as well as many old fashioned favorites. In any case, we know you won't be disappointed.
