JUST LETTING YOU KNOW THAT I RECEIVED THE SALVIAS I ORDER THE NEXT DAY AFTER YOU SHIPPED THEM.

THE NINE PLANTS THAT I ORDER WERE IN GOOD SHAPE PLUS THE FREE ONE THAT YOU GAVE ME.

SINCE THEY WERE MOIST I LET THEM REST OVER NIGHT AND PLANTED THEM IN GALLON CANS.
THE NEXT DAY AND THEY LOOK GOOD.

Got my order this afternoon. Everything was great, much better than I expected. Thanks for the extra keikis. Many of your keikis were bigger and more advanced than some 2 1/2-3 inch potted orchids I've received from other mail-order nurseries at 3 times the price.

Salvia africana-lutea
(Beach or Golden Sage) Young plants are thickly covered with elliptical, woolly gray-green leaves. 2”-4” stems carry whorls of very interesting one to two inch-long bright yellow flowers that age to rusty orange and look somewhat withered when mature, making them both an attraction and an oddity. Blooms mainly in the Winter and early Spring and sporadically through Fall.

Shear back by 1/3 in late Spring to encourage new basal growth. Plants need deep watering at least once a month(when established) and enjoy a loose, preferably sandy, soil.

This is a very unusual plant that we find to be tough and resilient.  Like many plants from the Cape region, apply fertilizer sparingly and have an acid to neutral, well drained soil.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia africana-lutea:

#714
Salvia 'Purple Stem' Salvia 'Purple Stem'

(Purple Stem Sage) Aside from knowing that it was collected in the Northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, little can be said with certainty about the taxonomy of this Salvia. What we can say definitively about this not-rare-but not-at-all-common plant is this: it is easy to grow, flowers abundantly, has stunning dark purple stems and does well in heat and with limited water.

Salvia albicaulis Salvia albicaulis

(White Stem Sage) From rocky, exposed slopes in South Africa comes this easy-to-grow and rewarding Sage. Called White Stem Sage because of the felted white stems, the big green, slightly leathery foliage is dense and attractive in and of itself. But when it starts to display the large, rich blue flowers with two white "bee lines", you will no doubt fall for this lovely plant.

Salvia chionophylla Salvia chionophylla

(Snowflake Sage) A most unusual trailing Sage, with small white leaves and wiry stems. Found in just one location in the mountains of the Chihuahuan desert of North Central Mexico. The common name comes from the general look of the plant, whose white leaves make it look like a fresh snowfall.

Salvia coahuilensis Salvia coahuilensis

(Coahuila Sage) Such a pretty little shrub! Small shiny deep green leaves clothe this densely branched, mounding Sage form the mountains of Coahuila, Mexico. In a sunny spot with good drainage the sheer number of beet-purple flowers will amaze you.

Salvia fruticosa Salvia fruticosa

(Greek Sage) Most of the dried culinary Sage sold in the United States is Greek Sage. Frescoes on Crete dated to 1400 BC depict this plant, It was used by the Phoenicians and Greeks for cooking and as a medicine. Truly, this is an ancient and beloved companion to mankind.

Salvia namaensis Salvia namaensis

(Nambian Sage) One of the most unusual Salvias we grow, with a loose feathery look from it's deeply cut “lyrate pinnatifid” leaves. Small light blue flowers are distributed over the small shrub almost year round. This is an ideal plant for hot areas, and requires little water to survive.  And it has a most pleasant fragrance, reminiscent of some of the California native Sages.

Salvia officinalis 'Berggarten' Salvia officinalis 'Berggarten'

(Mountain Culinary Sage) A German variety with very large and white leaves, this variety is widely grown for its value in cooking. Forming a small, tight mound and rarely flowering, it is a mainstay in herb gardens worldwide. It is easily recognized by its large, rounded leaves.

Culinary Sage was admired in Ancient Greece, where its medicinal values were prized.  Every kitchen garden needs one of these for it's myriad of uses in meat and vegetable dishes.

Salvia scabra Salvia scabra

(Coastal Blue Sage) On the sandy shores of the East Cape in South Africa grows this easy-to-grow, spreading perennial Sage. The lobed, lyre-shaped leaves are a deep green - quite a contrast to most of the Salvias from this region. The flower spikes grow up to a foot above the foliage clumps, sporting small purplish pink flowers that are quite attractive.

So why is it known in it's native region as "Blue Sage"?  Probably because the flowers have a blue sparkle to them in the bright sun.

Salvia somalensis Salvia somalensis

(Somalian Mountain Sage) From high elevation forests in Somalia comes this truly unique Sage. Very large powder blue flowers are profuse and long lasting, making it a focal point in any garden. Salvia tingitana Salvia tingitana

(Mauretania Tingitana Sage) A plant with a history. This rare Sage was first described in 1777, and was known for decades before this date. The origin of the plant was a hotly debated mystery - was it native to Egypt, Syria, Aleppo, Tunis, or Tangier - until 1989, when a specimen was discovered in Saudi Arabia.

Salvia x `Savannah Blue’ Salvia x `Savannah Blue’
