Testimonials
The plants are so beautiful: large, healthy and just ready to grow and bloom. These are among the best salvias I have ever received. The selection of plants is fantastic too. My first order, but it certainly won\'t be the last!
PS

I love you guys--the S. macrophylla started blooming flowers a few days after it arrived and so are the canariensis and radula that I ordered earlier in the month. They are absolutely gorgeous and I have no doubt they will thrive once planted in the ground. Thank you thank you!

I also wrote a yelp review to help get your site out there :-)

Salvia albicaulis

Salvia albicaulis

(White Stem Sage) This rewarding, easy-to-grow sage comes from rocky, exposed slopes in South Africa and is called White Stem Sage because of its felted white stems. The big, green, slightly leathery foliage is dense and attractive by itself. You'll definitely fall for it when this full-sun Salvia starts to display its large, rich blue flowers with two white bee lines.

The plant's dense branching, compact height and tendency to spread make it an ideal small scale ground cover subject. It is similar to Salvia  africana-carulea in look and cultural needs. A mixed group of these two and other South African Salvias makes a fine garden for hot and dry areas. Although we are not in a hot, dry area, White Stem Sage grows well for us.

We highly recommend this fragrant, drought-resistant perennial, which we love but the deer do not .

Salvia namaensis Salvia namaensis

(Nambian Sage) One of the most unusual Salvias we grow, with a loose feathery look from it's deeply cut “lyrate pinnatifid” leaves. Small light blue flowers are distributed over the small shrub almost year round. This is an ideal plant for hot areas, and requires little water to survive.  And it has a most pleasant fragrance, reminiscent of some of the California native Sages.

Salvia nilotica Salvia nilotica

(Highland African Sage) This Sage is native to a wide swath of the African highlands, from Ethiopia to Zimbabwe at elevations of up to 12,000 feet. We have found it to be a strong growing, hardy perennial that stands some drought.

Salvia pomifera Salvia pomifera

(Fruit Sage) Taking its common name from the small round galls that develop from the activity of a small fly native to the dry slopes of Crete, this drought loving Sage is as tough as they come. Salvia radula Salvia radula

(Scrappy African Sage) A fragrant and highly desirable sage for sunny areas. Not well known in the nursery trade, it is a lovely and reasonably hardy plant that should be used more often than it is.

From the plant-rich mountains of South Africa, growing at elevations of up to 6,200 feet, Scrappy African Sage is a herbaceous perennial, closely related to Salvia disermas, which it resembles. The flowers are sturdy and the leaves smell wonderfully.

#733
Salvia scabra Salvia scabra

(Coastal Blue Sage) On the sandy shores of the East Cape in South Africa grows this easy-to-grow, spreading perennial Sage. The lobed, lyre-shaped leaves are a deep green - quite a contrast to most of the Salvias from this region. The flower spikes grow up to a foot above the foliage clumps, sporting small purplish pink flowers that are quite attractive.

So why is it known in it's native region as "Blue Sage"?  Probably because the flowers have a blue sparkle to them in the bright sun.

 Our price: $7.50

#744
Salvia somalensis Salvia somalensis

(Somalian Mountain Sage) From high elevation forests in Somalia comes this truly unique Sage. Very large powder blue flowers are profuse and long lasting, making it a focal point in any garden. But the foliage is nothing short of spectacular - furry textured 4 inch leaves curl back gracefully, giving this plant a most graceful appearance.

#645
Salvia tingitana Salvia tingitana

(Mauretania Tingitana Sage) A plant with a history. This rare Sage was first described in 1777, and was known for decades before this date. The origin of the plant was a hotly debated mystery - was it native to Egypt, Syria, Aleppo, Tunis, or Tangier - until 1989, when a specimen was discovered in Saudi Arabia.

Salvia x `Savannah Blue’ Salvia x `Savannah Blue’

Sideritis oroteneriffae Sideritis oroteneriffae

(Canary Island White Sage) Thick, almost succulent leaves are so furry and white that everyone that sees this Canary Island native reaches out to stroke it. A true standout in a hot dry garden, this tough plant is the perfect background to show off the brightly colored flowers of many Salvias.

Salvia thymoides Salvia thymoides

(Thyme Leaf Sage) This is a gem! Tiny leaves, the size of the herb Thyme, are white wooly and dense on this small, well branched sub-shrub. The effect is almost white, which nicely displays the small cerulean blue flowers that have two prominent bee lines. This is a plant to see up close, in a container or rock garden.

Synopsis: Flowers by the Sea is a home away from home for a number of South African Salvias that enjoy our moderate, Mediterranean climate. None are endangered species, but all face the threat of land development in the Western Cape's Fynbos Biome -- unparalleled for its variety of medicinal and ornamental native plants found nowhere else in the world. Preservationists are working to balance changes in land use and to maintain biodiversity in the CFR. Brutal poaching of rhinoceroses is one of the toughest problems they face.
