Salvia disermas alba
(White Transvaal Sage) Growing in partially shades stream beds and rocky grasslands, this herbaceous perennial south African sage is showy and tough, adapted to a wide variety of conditions and garden uses. This is the white flowered form.
This is a lush grower that fits well both in wild gardens and formal borders. The flowers are white, and quite large on nice spikes. Use this plant with
Carex comans 'Amazon Mist'
and the
pink form of Transvaal Sage
for a combination that will really attract attention.
Salvia disermas' aromatic leaves are used as a substitute for tea and used in cooking, although very sparingly. A lotion can be made for skin rashes, stings, bites, pimples, infected scrapes, scratches and sores. A little of this brew or a tea is taken as a tonic to re-energize the body after a long illness and to bring down fevers. A teaspoon at a time of this tea is a good heartburn remedy.
