Never have gotten a delivery so quickly of mail-order plants and what's more, the plants were superior in quality to anything I've seen before. We have great nurseries in Berkeley and nearby but I must say, these were spectacular!

Got my order this afternoon. Everything was great, much better than I expected. Thanks for the extra keikis. Many of your keikis were bigger and more advanced than some 2 1/2-3 inch potted orchids I've received from other mail-order nurseries at 3 times the price.

Salvia flocculosa
(Blue Ecuadorian Sage) A beautiful, densely branched shrub with silvery leaves, this rare species was once thought to be S. cruickshanksii. In the California nursery trade, it has been called "Salvia 'Equador'". This is the true species, a great garden plant for warm areas.

We find this plant does best with ample water, but it is remarkably drought resistant if necessary.  The warmer your garden is, the larger it grows.  We have reports of monster plants 12 feet tall in the hills above the Monterey Bay.

The lovely mid-blue flowers are strongly marked with white, and seem never to stop.  Especially in the warmth of summer this variety is one that blooms non-stop.  It needs to be cut back occasionally so that new growth predominates.

Found in only six locations in the Andes at 8,000 to 9,000 feet, this is a species considered "vulnerable", one step short of endangered.

Great in containers, where it is a fine background for darker or glossy green leaves.  It's ultimate cold tolerance is unknown, and may be a candidate for Zones 7 and 8.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia flocculosa:

#637
Salvia curviflora Salvia curviflora

(Pink Tehuacan Sage) Large, hot magenta-pink flowers in large clusters top the elegant foliage of this most worthwhile sage. It blooms for us over a long season, starting in the late Spring. An elegant and rare Sage that should be more widely planted.

 Our price: $7.00

#701
Salvia cuspidata ssp. gilliesii Salvia cuspidata ssp. gilliesii

(Chilean Mountain Sage) This spectacular shrub, which used to be known as S. gillesii, is delicate in appearance but strong growing and robust in the garden. A native of the Chilean Andes, it grows in the full sun on rocky slopes often shrouded in fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The rounded wooly soft grey toothed leaves are pleasantly scented, and drape on the plant in a way that reminds me of the limbs of conifers.

#687
Salvia oxyphora Salvia oxyphora

(Fuzzy Bolivian Sage) Dramatic large fuzzy pink flowers in large clusters top this shiny, dark-green-leaved, tropical looking plant. To say that it stands out in the garden is a true understatement. This is not your parents Salvia.

 Our price: $7.50
Amount:

#620
Salvia tubiflora Salvia tubiflora

(Tubular Chilean Sage) This rare sage from the coastal mountains of northern Chile grows in an environment of foggy days and moderate temperatures. In the wild it can grow 9 feet tall and wide, but we have never seen one that large.

 Our price: $8.50
Amount:

#692
Salvia x westerae Salvia x westerae

(Hybrid Bolivian Sage) A natural hybrid between two Andean species, S. orbignaei and S. haenkei, this Bolivian native is nicer than either of its parents and deserving of a place in the garden. The large, dark pink flowers are profuse and long blooming. An ideal container plant!

 Our price: $8.00
