I received my four plants today (that was really fast shipping.) I have been really excited about receiving these. Knowing there are a lot of fraud websites out there, it's hard not to be the least bit skeptical when ordering online. Someone I met online had purchased some plants from here too so I trusted my gut and went ahead. For a second I thought they might not come at all, or they wouldn't be healthy. When I opened all the plants I was amazed!

They were definitely not amateur. All were bushy and pinched, like promised. Of course they're a little bent from being sent, which will go away soon, not a problem! You really went above and beyond.

Got my order this afternoon. Everything was great, much better than I expected. Thanks for the extra keikis. Many of your keikis were bigger and more advanced than some 2 1/2-3 inch potted orchids I've received from other mail-order nurseries at 3 times the price.

Salvia karwinskii 'Red Form'
(Red Flowered Karwinski's Sage) From moist mountain areas in Mexico and Central America, this rugged, winter blooming shrub is found in oak or pine forests at 4,000ft.-8,000ft. It’s high altitude habitat must account for the fact that this winter bloomer withstands short term temperatures into the low 20’s and still produces a few flowers!

Speaking of which, there is some variability in bloom color. Brick-red, rose-red and scarlet are some reported. This variety, originally collected by the San Francisco Botanic Garden, has brick red flowers. Leaves are also rather large and attractive, up to 6” and pebbly on the surface with cream colored hairs on the underside. Because of it’s generous size, a warm, protected spot is helpful, a south facing wall is ideal.

To encourage a more upright and compact growth habit, you can either periodically remove some it’s flowering branches, or, prune down to the last few active growth nodes once a year at the end of it’s flowering and when you’re sure there is no chance of a frost.

 (Cardinal Sage) Aptly named for its bright cardinal red two inch flowers that glisten in the Autumn sun, this is another Salvia whose nomenclature is in dispute. Is it S. fulgens, S. cardinalis or S. fulgens var. cardinalis? In any case, it is a very fine late blooming Sage.

Salvia gesneriiflora 'Mountain Form' Salvia gesneriiflora 'Mountain Form'

 (Mexican Mountain Scarlet Sage) The origin of this dwarf form of the species is not clear beyond the fact that it came from from Mexico.  Amazing long (up to 12") flower spikes start in the early Winter and continue through Spring, covering the plant with dark red flowers and red bracts. This clone differs from the more commonly known 'Tequila' in being much smaller in growth, having smaller leaves and flowers, and having very distinctive red bracts.

Salvia gregii x karwinskii 'Brent's' Salvia gregii x karwinskii 'Brent's'

 (Brent's Fall Hybrid Sage) Hybrid Sages using S. gregii are common. This one is quite uncommon. The other parent is the tall growing tubular flowered S. involucrata, Roseleaf Sage. The result, selected by hybridizer Brent Barnes, is a plant somewhere in between it's parents in leaf and growth, with 2 inch tubular hot pink flowers that will stop you in your tracks every time.

 (Winter Mexican Sage) We haven't been so excited about any plant in a long time. This sage blooms through 20 degree weather with snow and ice, has a graceful habit with lovely small dark green leaves and even spreads gently. Oh, and the flowers - the tubular one inch cinnabar red flowers puff out in the center, and are profusely presented in large clusters.

 (Roseleaf Sage)  One of our very favorite plants. It starts flowering in August, and continues - more and more spectacular every day - until cut down to the ground by a hard frost. This Salvia requires a bit of high shade in the hottest climates, and appreciates a rich soil with regular watering.

Pair Roseleaf Sage with our fine ornamental grass, Stipa arundinacea 'Sirocco" for a perfect marriage of form, color and culture.

 (Hidalgo Roseleaf Sage) The earliest flowering, hardiest and strongest growing cultivar of this species. It starts its outstanding floral display in June here on the Northern California coast, and continues - more and more spectacular every day - until cut down to the ground by a 20 degree frost. Some years it actually never stops blooming!

This Salvia requires a bit of high shade in the hottest climates, and appreciates a rich soil with regular watering.
