Salvia urticifolia
(Nettle Leaf Sage) Native to the Southeastern United States, this lovely herbaceous perennial is found from Florida to Pennsylvania - but is listed as an endangered plant in three states. The common and botanical name refer to the leaves, which resemble the Stinging Nettle, Urtica diocea.

Lovely bright purple flowers with two prominent bee lines are about 1/2 inch in size, but numerous enough on the foot long spike to make this a good plant for the shady garden - especially a woodland setting.  Give it good soil and at least regular water for best growth, although it can survive drought when established.

This US native deserves much greater prominence in our gardens.
