Wikipedia says the following about Salvias:
Salvia is a genus of plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is generally referred to as sage. When used without modifiers, sage generally refers to common sage (Salvia officinalis); however, it can be used with modifiers to refer to any member of the genus. This genus includes approximately 700 to 900 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals with almost world-wide distribution. The center of diversity and origin appears to be California/Mexico/Central America and Southwestern Asia. Many species are grown as herbs; culinary, medicinal and shamanistic. The ornamental species are commonly referred to by their scientific name Salvia.
When we at Flowers by the Sea talk about Salvias, we use words like: fabulous, incredible, another favorite, did you see . . .
Salvias are widely adapted and durable garden and container plants that will bring you color, fragrance, hummingbirds and feed the honeybees. Properly placed, they can be the backbone of your landscape, the eye-catching plant tucked into a corner, or the workhorse shrubs or groundcover that never seems to get enough attention – but still thrives. I just want to go out into the garden and lie in them now!
We invite you to explore the world of Salvias, and check out some of the nearly 100 varieties we will offer in 2009. Many are quite limited, and some rare. Check back often for new listings!
We've broken down our offerings into two groups.
Hardy Salvias will survive USDA Zone 7 winters with reasonable protection.
Tender Salvias are generally Zone 8 or above plants without overwintering in a protected area. Many of these are so noteworthy that they are worth the extra effort!
