Flowers by the Sea is proud to offer a wide selection of healthy, strong growing vegetable, herb and flower plants. All have been selected and grown to be wildly successful in your home garden. These are the very same plants we use on our farm, so you are assured they are the very best of their kind. If a plant is troublesome or finicky, we wouldn't consider offering it for sale to you. We succeed not just by making a sale, but by having you enjoy our plants for years to come.
No synthetic fertilizers or toxic chemicals are ever used on our crops. In fact, we are a USDA Certified Organic nursery, one of the very few in all of California. In addition, we are a Demeter Certified Biodynamic© farm as well, holding to the highest standards of purity and stewardship of the land. Our guiding principal is "do no harm", and we strive to grow superior plants using creative and time honored techniques. To many, the chemicals that pervade the nursery industry are "necessary". Our efforts prove otherwise.
- What does this mean?
- Why is it important?
- Your plants cost more than some other nurseries. Why should I use them?
Consider these facts:
Fungicides are the most poisonous of all agricultural chemicals. Some are so toxic that 1/8 tsp. can kill an infant. These are used routinely (as often as every third day) on ALL greenhouse nursery plants. And many are persistent in the food chain, causing reproductive difficulties for months after being applied. Increased use of fungicides has led to new, resistant strains of many plant diseases, which leads to more-and-more chemicals being used.
Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are used to keep nursery plants small to be able to fit more on store shelves. These chemicals have a height-suppressing effect for the entire life of the plant. Want an artificially-induced short tomato plant?
Many of the insecticides most widely used on nursery plants are systemic – that is they become part of the plant juices and poison the insects when they bite a leaf. Do you really want these in your herbs - or in your environment?
Chemically produced tomato plants are sprayed with fungicides, insecticides and PGRs (to keep them short) as many as 12 times before you purchase them.
Petroleum-based artificial fertilizers are used to grow a salable “product” as rapidly as possible – with no concern as to the long-term health of the plant. Good root development, the key to garden success, is ignored. And it increases our use of precious petroleum resources that are not necessary, or even desirable for good and healthy plant growth.
The varieties grown for mass-market sales are the best known and least expensive, NOT the best adapted to your garden or those with exceptional vigor and pest resistance.
To ensure the safety of yourself and your family, and to have the most vigorous and tasty vegetables, always use Flowers by the Sea Certified Organic plants in your garden.
And as always, we urge you to buy local whenever possible.
