This is my second year ordering from this fine nursery. The plants are large and healthy, and the choices are spectacular! They were very well packed and shipping was very quick.

Salvia azurea
(Prairie Sage) Native to a large part of the Central United States, this perennial Sage is a beloved wildflower, delighting us with large cerulean blue flowers. Not rare or endangered, but a great addition to a garden where it will delight you with the rich color.

In full sun with good soil, the display of flowers this plant gives in late Summer and Fall is spectacular.  We like to use it among other perennials and shrubs, where it can poke its head out here and there.  A plant that should be in wider use.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia azurea:

#381
Salvia africana-lutea Salvia africana-lutea

(Beach or Golden Sage) Young plants are thickly covered with elliptical, woolly gray-green leaves. 2”-4” stems carry whorls of very interesting one to two inch-long bright yellow flowers that age to rusty orange and look somewhat withered when mature, making them both an attraction and an oddity. Blooms mainly in the Winter and early Spring and sporadically through Fall.

Shear back by 1/3 in late Spring to encourage new basal growth. Plants need deep watering at least once a month(when established) and enjoy a loose, preferably sandy, soil.

This is a very unusual plant that we find to be tough and resilient.  Like many plants from the Cape region, apply fertilizer sparingly and have an acid to neutral, well drained soil.

Salvia barrelieri Salvia barrelieri

(North African Sage) This stunning herbaceous perennial has sky blue flowers on showy, tall branched spikes.

Salvia coahuilensis Salvia coahuilensis

(Coahuila Sage) Such a pretty little shrub! Small shiny deep green leaves clothe this densely branched, mounding Sage form the mountains of Coahuila, Mexico. In a sunny spot with good drainage the sheer number of beet-purple flowers will amaze you.

#650
Salvia keerli Salvia keerli

(Big Grape Sage) There is a bit of confusion between this plant and Grape Scented Sage (Salvia melissodora), which it resembles. Big Grape Sage is larger in leaf and size, with larger flowers as well. It makes a great companion planted with it's little brother, which shares the same cultural needs.

#316
Salvia lanceolata Salvia lanceolata

(Rusty Sage)  One of our personal favorites because of it’s enchanting flower color (dusty rose), it’s nearly care-free culture and well-behaved, compact growth habit, this evergreen , woody sub-shrub is a must have for any garden with full sun and sharply draining soil that is low in organic matter.
