Never have gotten a delivery so quickly of mail-order plants and what's more, the plants were superior in quality to anything I've seen before. We have great nurseries in Berkeley and nearby but I must say, these were spectacular!

Salvia chionophylla
(Snowflake Sage) A most unusual trailing Sage, with small white leaves and wiry stems. Found in just one location in the mountains of the Chihuahuan desert of North Central Mexico. The common name comes from the general look of the plant, whose white leaves make it look like a fresh snowfall.

The small mid-blue flowers are numerous and have prominent bee lines.  This is a perfect ground cover in well drained soil, but we like it best spilling over the edge of a mixed planter or in a hanging basket.  It can take a bit of shade in hot areas, but is at its best in full sun.

We suspect that this species may be hardy in the warmest parts of Zone 6, in very well drained soil and well mulched.

Highly recommended.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia chionophylla:

#655
Salvia africana-carulea Salvia africana-carulea

(Blue African Sage or Blousalie) A handsome and unusual, densely branched shrub with small, gray leaves, this Salvia puts on a show when in full bloom. The pale blue flowers are born on foot long spikes that cover the plant, and have a large, trumpet shaped green & red bract at their base.

 Our price: $8.00

#381
Salvia africana-lutea Salvia africana-lutea

(Beach or Golden Sage) Young plants are thickly covered with elliptical, woolly gray-green leaves. 2”-4” stems carry whorls of very interesting one to two inch-long bright yellow flowers that age to rusty orange and look somewhat withered when mature, making them both an attraction and an oddity. Blooms mainly in the Winter and early Spring and sporadically through Fall.

Shear back by 1/3 in late Spring to encourage new basal growth. Plants need deep watering at least once a month(when established) and enjoy a loose, preferably sandy, soil.

This is a very unusual plant that we find to be tough and resilient.  Like many plants from the Cape region, apply fertilizer sparingly and have an acid to neutral, well drained soil.

Salvia barrelieri Salvia barrelieri

(North African Sage) This stunning herbaceous perennial has sky blue flowers on showy, tall branched spikes.

Salvia canariensis alba Salvia canariensis alba

(White Canary Island Sage) A large and truly spectacular Sage that can be the focal point of a Mediterranean garden. The numerous, cloud-like spikes of white flowers show nicely against the large hairy leaves. Drought resistant!

Salvia canescens var. daghestanica Salvia canescens var. daghestanica

(Caucasus Sage) Another very fine ground cover sage - this one with white furry leaves and soft royal purple flowers. And its hardy & drought resistant. Another Salvia that deserves to be used far more than it is.

 Our price: $7.00
Amount:

#679
Salvia chamadryoides x ‘Marine Blue’ Salvia chamadryoides x ‘Marine Blue’

(Marine Blue Sage) The name and origin of this fine cultivar has long been in dispute. It may be a clone or hybrid of Salvia chamaedryoides var.isochroma. We have grown this variety for many years now, and offer it for what it is - not for its name.

 Our price: $7.50

#286
Salvia cleistogama Salvia cleistogama

(Closed Sage) This somewhat rare Salvia is a very fine, yellow flowered herbaceous perennial. Originally native to Europe, it has become naturalized in Alabama, California, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

#627
Salvia coahuilensis Salvia coahuilensis

(Coahuila Sage) Such a pretty little shrub! Small shiny deep green leaves clothe this densely branched, mounding Sage form the mountains of Coahuila, Mexico. In a sunny spot with good drainage the sheer number of beet-purple flowers will amaze you.

 Our price: $6.00

#293
Salvia discolor Salvia discolor

(Peruvian Sage or Concolor Sage) This native to the high Andes in Peru is one of the most distinctive of all Salvias. The leaves are apple green and smooth on the top, and have silver hairs on the bottoms. This alone is enough to recommend this plant - but the flowers . . .

#650
Salvia keerli Salvia keerli

(Big Grape Sage) There is a bit of confusion between this plant and Grape Scented Sage (Salvia melissodora), which it resembles. Big Grape Sage is larger in leaf and size, with larger flowers as well. It makes a great companion planted with it's little brother, which shares the same cultural needs.

#316
Salvia lanceolata Salvia lanceolata

(Rusty Sage)  One of our personal favorites because of it’s enchanting flower color (dusty rose), it’s nearly care-free culture and well-behaved, compact growth habit, this evergreen , woody sub-shrub is a must have for any garden with full sun and sharply draining soil that is low in organic matter.

#662
Salvia leucantha 'Danielle's Dream' Salvia leucantha 'Danielle's Dream'

(White Mexican Bush Sage) This distinctive variety is originally from South Africa. It goes by many different names and in our experience many of the plants sold under this name are not the true variety. This one is compact, long blooming and tough, with pure white velvety bracts and soft pink flowers in profusion.

 Our price: $7.00

#622
Salvia madrensis 'Silver Leaf' Salvia madrensis 'Silver Leaf'

(Silver Leaf Forysthia Sage)  Another late blooming, high altitude (4,000-5,000ft.) perennial from the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico. This clone has conspicuously silvery and smaller leaves than the common species.

 Our price: $7.00

#638
Salvia radula Salvia radula

(Scrappy African Sage) A fragrant and highly desirable sage for sunny areas. Not well known in the nursery trade, it is a lovely and reasonably hardy plant that should be used more often than it is.

From the plant-rich mountains of South Africa, growing at elevations of up to 6,200 feet, Scrappy African Sage is a herbaceous perennial, closely related to Salvia disermas, which it resembles. The flowers are sturdy and the leaves smell wonderfully.

Salvia taraxacifolia Salvia taraxacifolia

(Dandelion Leaf Sage) A most unusual and rewarding Salvia from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, this sturdy ground cover is hardy and adaptable.

#645
Salvia tingitana Salvia tingitana

(Mauretania Tingitana Sage) A plant with a history. This rare Sage was first described in 1777, and was known for decades before this date. The origin of the plant was a hotly debated mystery - was it native to Egypt, Syria, Aleppo, Tunis, or Tangier - until 1989, when a specimen was discovered in Saudi Arabia.

#593
Salvia viscosa Salvia viscosa

(Mid-East Sage) Native to the mountains shared by Israel and Lebanon, this tidy sage is drought resistant, warmth tolerant and flowers over a long period of time.

 Our price: $5.50
Amount:

#640
Salvia x jamensis 'Golden Elk' Salvia x jamensis 'Golden Elk'

(Golden Elk Mountain Sage) The first offering of our exciting new hybrid sage. Golden Elk is more compact, has better foliage and to our eye larger flowers than the well known variety, 'Sierra San Antonio' that it resembles. And here on the cool and humid Northern California coast it grows better than any other Mountain Sage.
