I received 2 shipments in 2010, total of 8 plants, all salvias. I received large plants per capita and they were growing in an interesting well-drained mix. It contained what looked like tiny bits of clay pots in place of perlite. I highly recommend this nursery based on 2010 experience and future 2011 same.

This is my second year ordering from this fine nursery. The plants are large and healthy, and the choices are spectacular! They were very well packed and shipping was very quick.

Salvia madrensis 'Silver Leaf'
(Silver Leaf Forysthia Sage)  Another late blooming, high altitude (4,000-5,000ft.) perennial from the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico.

We have found it hardy to at least 20F and will come back from root stock if knocked down to the ground by short periods of colder temperatures.

Flowers are an unusual (for a Salvia) butter yellow and first appear in Fall then continue till frost or Spring in mild winter areas. Good for cut flowers.

The heart shaped, rough textured leaves generously clothe the plant and are graduated in size starting out large at the bottom and smaller on top. This clone has conspicuously silvery and smaller leaves than the common specie, and is a bit smaller overall.

Plant forms a multi-stemmed thicket via slowly spreading rootstock and can easily be kept tidy by pulling the unwanted stems out. Morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.

This is a prehistoric-looking plant when it is growing. The square stems can get 3" across, and the plant seems to grow before your eyes. I love it with Bog Sage, Salvia uliginosa, planted at its base.

Salvia chionophylla Salvia chionophylla

(Snowflake Sage) A most unusual trailing Sage, with small white leaves and wiry stems. Found in just one location in the mountains of the Chihuahuan desert of North Central Mexico. The common name comes from the general look of the plant, whose white leaves make it look like a fresh snowfall.

Salvia madrensis 'Red Neck Girl' Salvia madrensis 'Red Neck Girl'

Salvia confertiflora Salvia confertiflora

(Red Velvet Sage) The 12” to 18” inflorescence of this exotic looking Salvia are crowded with small, velvety, orange-red flowers from mid-Summer to late-Autumn. It’s large, dark green, pebbly textured leaves are beautiful in their own right, making this one of our top 5 Salvia favorites.

By blooming time, either shelter from the wind, staking or near-by ‘support’ plants will prevent breakage of it’s heavy, red tinged stems. We have found that deep, weekly watering, an occasional light feeding of multipurpose fertilizer and heavy pruning in late Winter or early Spring keeps this dramatic plant looking it’s best.

#356
Salvia uliginosa Salvia uliginosa

(Bog Sage) This highly adaptive Salvia is ideal for the beginner as it is not at all fussy about soil type, sun exposure, drainage or frequency of watering.

#559
Salvia melissodora Salvia melissodora

(Grape Scented Sage) Widely distributed Mexican sage has been used by the Tamahumara for centuries. For the gardener today, it offers drought resistance, beautiful and grape scented lavender flowers and a tidy habit.
