I ordered 4 salvia this year. All arrived GREEN and VIBRANT--no wilt and no breakage. By far the best plant packing I have seen...but most importantly, all the plants went into the ground and took perfectly.

I love the selection! Please keep scouring the world for new salvias.

Also love the blog!

Salvia tingitana
(Mauretania Tingitana Sage) A plant with a history. This rare Sage was first described in 1777, and was known for decades before this date. The origin of the plant was a hotly debated mystery - was it native to Egypt, Syria, Aleppo, Tunis, or Tangier - until 1989, when a specimen was discovered in Saudi Arabia.

Regardless of its place of origin, it is a delightful and somewhat unusual Salvia that grows in a wide range of conditions. Given at least a half day of sun and well drained soil, its lovely large, rugose, lime green and heavily textured and scented leaves form a compact mound. The flower spikes branch freely, and display a large number of one inch long bi-color, yellow and lavender flowers.

This plant deserves much wider use. Highly recommended.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia tingitana:

#714
Salvia 'Purple Stem' Salvia 'Purple Stem'

(Purple Stem Sage) Aside from knowing that it was collected in the Northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, little can be said with certainty about the taxonomy of this Salvia. What we can say definitively about this not-rare-but not-at-all-common plant is this: it is easy to grow, flowers abundantly, has stunning dark purple stems and does well in heat and with limited water.

Salvia africana-carulea Salvia africana-carulea

(Blue African Sage or Blousalie) A handsome and unusual, densely branched shrub with small, gray leaves, this Salvia puts on a show when in full bloom. The pale blue flowers are born on foot long spikes that cover the plant, and have a large, trumpet shaped green & red bract at their base.

#381
Salvia africana-lutea Salvia africana-lutea

(Beach or Golden Sage) Young plants are thickly covered with elliptical, woolly gray-green leaves. 2”-4” stems carry whorls of very interesting one to two inch-long bright yellow flowers that age to rusty orange and look somewhat withered when mature, making them both an attraction and an oddity. Blooms mainly in the Winter and early Spring and sporadically through Fall.

Shear back by 1/3 in late Spring to encourage new basal growth. Plants need deep watering at least once a month(when established) and enjoy a loose, preferably sandy, soil.

This is a very unusual plant that we find to be tough and resilient.  Like many plants from the Cape region, apply fertilizer sparingly and have an acid to neutral, well drained soil.

Salvia barrelieri Salvia barrelieri

(North African Sage) This stunning herbaceous perennial has sky blue flowers on showy, tall branched spikes.

Salvia broussonetii Salvia broussonetii

(Stiff Canary Island Sage) This water-wise Salvia has simply beautiful, large furry foliage! The branched spikes of small white flowers are a nice contrast to the leaves, which are large and lush.

Salvia canariensis Salvia canariensis

(Canary Island Sage) A large and truly spectacular Sage that can be the focal point of a Mediterranean garden. The numerous, cloud-like spikes of purple-violet flowers show nicely against the large hairy leaves.

Salvia canariensis alba Salvia canariensis alba

(White Canary Island Sage) A large and truly spectacular Sage that can be the focal point of a Mediterranean garden. The numerous, cloud-like spikes of white flowers show nicely against the large hairy leaves. Drought resistant!

Salvia chamelaeagnea Salvia chamelaeagnea

(Rough Blue Sage) Salvia chamelaeagnea, which grows wild in the south western Cape, is a member of the most diverse plant community in the world, the fynbos (an Afrikaans word, meaning, literally, fine bush, but a dictionary translation would be scrub or shrubbery).

Salvia chionophylla Salvia chionophylla

(Snowflake Sage) A most unusual trailing Sage, with small white leaves and wiry stems. Found in just one location in the mountains of the Chihuahuan desert of North Central Mexico. The common name comes from the general look of the plant, whose white leaves make it look like a fresh snowfall.

 Our price: $7.00

Salvia desoleana Salvia desoleana

(Sardinian Sage) This is another must-have Salvia with elegant leaves and bright rose pink flowers. It spreads gently as a herbaceous perennial and almost never stops blooming for us.

Salvia dominica Salvia dominica

(Dominican Sage) Native to Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, this shrubby perennial is said to have been the inspiration for the design of the menorah (Exodus 37:17). It is a tough, drought resistant plant with attractive silver-haired foliage and flowers, and many important medicinal uses.

Salvia heirosolimitana Salvia heirosolimitana

(Jerusalem Sage) A lovely and thrifty herbaceous perennial from Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank, the flower color of this Sage seems to change from a clear pink to a pink highlighted with violet lines and dots. The prominent glandular hairs found on the buds, bracts and floral stems are very fragrant - almost medicinal - delightful on a warm day.

#316
Salvia lanceolata Salvia lanceolata

(Rusty Sage)  One of our personal favorites because of it’s enchanting flower color (dusty rose), it’s nearly care-free culture and well-behaved, compact growth habit, this evergreen , woody sub-shrub is a must have for any garden with full sun and sharply draining soil that is low in organic matter.

 Our price: $7.50

#675
Salvia lasiantha Salvia lasiantha

(Wooly Multicolor Sage) The large wrinkled foliage and white wooly stems of this large, shrubby Sage is reason enough to grow it. But the flowers and wooly bracts are unlike any other Salvia we have ever seen. Starting in the morning as an orange-apricot, they age as the day goes on to a reddish-purple. The bracts are white, with overlays of pink, orange, violet and cream. The flower clusters are large and on display from mid Summer until the onset of cold weather.

Salvia nilotica Salvia nilotica

(Highland African Sage) This Sage is native to a wide swath of the African highlands, from Ethiopia to Zimbabwe at elevations of up to 12,000 feet. We have found it to be a strong growing, hardy perennial that stands some drought.
