My order came a couple of days ago and I had to write and thank you. The packing was some of the best I've seen and all the plants were large beautiful specimens, every single one arriving in excellent shape.

I buy a lot of plants mail order and your nursery is at the top of my list! Thank you for the excellent job you do and your customer service is the best!
Karen Taylor

My plants arrived quickly and they were in excellent health. So far, they are doing well in my yard despite the unusually dry weather we've had on the Monterey Peninsula this winter. I will definitely order from fbts again!

Salvia muelleri
(Royal Purple Autumn Sage) Part of the complex of species that include S. gregii and S. microphylla, this intensely purple flowered Sage is at its best in the short days of Fall. Small leafed and densely branched, this plant is a small shrub in Zones 8 & 9, a herbaceous perennial in Zone 7. It has a soft texture and does well at the edge of pathways, in mixed borders or in containers where it can be enjoyed close up.

From the mountains of Monterey, Mexico, where dry conditions prevail, this Sage will take regular garden water in well drained soil and with full sun.  It also grows in partial shade, where water should be restricted or lots of growth and few flowers will be the rule.  The peak bloom is in the Fall, but it flowers on and off all through the growing season.

Try this with Salvia x jamensis 'Golden Elk' for an amazing color combo.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia muelleri:

#714
Salvia 'Purple Stem' Salvia 'Purple Stem'

(Purple Stem Sage) Aside from knowing that it was collected in the Northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, little can be said with certainty about the taxonomy of this Salvia. What we can say definitively about this not-rare-but not-at-all-common plant is this: it is easy to grow, flowers abundantly, has stunning dark purple stems and does well in heat and with limited water.

Salvia coahuilensis Salvia coahuilensis

(Coahuila Sage) Such a pretty little shrub! Small shiny deep green leaves clothe this densely branched, mounding Sage form the mountains of Coahuila, Mexico. In a sunny spot with good drainage the sheer number of beet-purple flowers will amaze you.

Salvia fruticosa Salvia fruticosa

(Greek Sage) Most of the dried culinary Sage sold in the United States is Greek Sage. Frescoes on Crete dated to 1400 BC depict this plant, It was used by the Phoenicians and Greeks for cooking and as a medicine. Truly, this is an ancient and beloved companion to mankind.

Salvia leucantha 'Purple Dwarf' Salvia leucantha 'Purple Dwarf'

(Dwarf Mexican Bush Sage or Velvet Sage) This variety is compact, free blooming and has very large flowers. If you love Mexican Bush Sage but have limited space or need a variety for a container, this one is for you.

Salvia scordifolia Salvia scordifolia

(Scordy Sage) Another sage that sells itself instantly when seen in bloom. The flower color is rich and saturated, and its easy to grow. For us, it is very much stronger and easier to grow than Grape Scented Sage (Salvia melissodora), which it resembles in foliage.

Salvia x jamensis 'Betty' Salvia x jamensis 'Betty'

(Betty's Mountain Sage) Every year nurseries large and small release dozens of new S. x jamensis varieties. We grow as many of the new ones as we can, and only a very few make the cut as different and worthwhile. This one from our Salvia Guru Brent Barnes of Riverside, California, is truly exceptional.

It is compact, very free blooming, and strong growing. The flowers are a creamy soft lavender purple with a darker throat. The bracts are a dark shade of violet-purple, setting off the flowers in a distinctive fashion. The stems are purple as well, making this plant a standout in any garden.

Highly recommended!

Salvia x jamensis 'Golden Elk' Salvia x jamensis 'Golden Elk'

(Golden Elk Mountain Sage) The first offering of our exciting new hybrid sage. Golden Elk is more compact, has better foliage and to our eye larger flowers than the well known variety, 'Sierra San Antonio' that it resembles. And here on the cool and humid Northern California coast it grows better than any other Mountain Sage.

Salvia x jamensis 'Yellow Pink' Salvia x jamensis 'Yellow Pink'

(Yellow Pink Mountain Sage) Every year nurseries large and small release dozens of new S. x jamensis varieties. We grow as many of the new ones as we can, and only a very few make the cut as different and worthwhile. This one from our Salvia Guru Brent Barnes of Riverside, California, has a color we have never seen in a Salvia before..

It is a small compact grower that never seems to stop blooming. The flowers are a creamy soft rose pink with a yellow overlay. Difficult to describe, but lovely and captivating in person.

Highly recommended!
