My plants arrived quickly and they were in excellent health. So far, they are doing well in my yard despite the unusually dry weather we've had on the Monterey Peninsula this winter. I will definitely order from fbts again!

Salvia cuspidata ssp. gilliesii
(Chilean Mountain Sage) This spectacular shrub, which used to be known as S. gillesii, is delicate in appearance but strong growing and robust in the garden. A native of the Chilean Andes, it grows in the full sun on rocky slopes often shrouded in fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The rounded wooly soft grey toothed leaves are pleasantly scented, and drape on the plant in a way that reminds me of the limbs of conifers.

Mid-blue flowers on two foot spikes start in the late Summer and go through until the onset of Winter weather.  Even with no flowers this is a most attractive plant!

Grow in well drained soil - rich if possible, in a space with enough room to appreciate its shape and form.  It works quite well on slopes, where it cascades gracefully.  It can tolerate drought, but is most attractive with regular watering.

Highly recommended!

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia cuspidata ssp. gilliesii:

#291
Salvia corrugata Salvia corrugata

(Corrugated Sage) Dense, purplish blue whorled inflorescence nicely complement this handsome plant‘s somewhat linear, deeply textured, dark green leaves with cottony undersides.

This evergreen shrub grows quickly and easily to 4‘-6’, needing only full sun, well drained soil and regular water to stay in nearly continuous bloom and looking it’s best.  With occasional pruning of the growing tips, or, growing it in a decorative pot, it can also be held to a 2’-3’ shrub.

We especially enjoy contrasting this plant’s rounded, dense growth habit with our taller, airier Sages, like Salvia guaranitica 'Purple Majesty'.

Salvia curviflora Salvia curviflora

(Pink Tehuacan Sage) Large, hot magenta-pink flowers in large clusters top the elegant foliage of this most worthwhile sage. It blooms for us over a long season, starting in the late Spring. An elegant and rare Sage that should be more widely planted.

Salvia discolor Salvia discolor

(Peruvian Sage or Concolor Sage) This native to the high Andes in Peru is one of the most distinctive of all Salvias. The leaves are apple green and smooth on the top, and have silver hairs on the bottoms. This alone is enough to recommend this plant - but the flowers . . .

Salvia flocculosa Salvia flocculosa

(Blue Ecuadorian Sage) A beautiful, densely branched shrub with silvery leaves, this rare species was once thought to be S. cruickshanksii. In the California nursery trade, it has been called "Salvia 'Equador'". This is the true species, a great garden plant for warm areas.

Salvia macrophylla 'Short Form' Salvia macrophylla 'Short Form'

(Creeping Big Leaf Sage) Cobalt blue flowers float in airy clusters above the large, velvety leaves of this South American native sage. As a bold statement in a container, it has no equal. The hummingbirds will thank you for having this plant in your garden.

Salvia macrophylla 'Tall Form' Salvia macrophylla 'Tall Form'

(Tall Big Leaf Sage) Cobalt blue flowers float in airy clusters above the large, velvety leaves of this South American native sage. Salvia sagittata Salvia sagittata

(Arrowleaf Sage) This unusual herbaceous perennial is found at high elevations (9,500ft.-10,000ft.) in the Cordillera de los Andes of Chile and Peru. It’s arrow-head shaped leaves (sagittata refers to this shape) are deeply textured, yellow-green and woolly on the undersides.

The blooms are a gorgeous, brilliant royal blue and rise 1’-2’ from the leafy stems starting in Summer and continuing through the Fall.

Salvia somalensis Salvia somalensis

(Somalian Mountain Sage) From high elevation forests in Somalia comes this truly unique Sage. Very large powder blue flowers are profuse and long lasting, making it a focal point in any garden. But the foliage is nothing short of spectacular - furry textured 4 inch leaves curl back gracefully, giving this plant a most graceful appearance.

Salvia x 'Big Swing' Salvia x 'Big Swing'

(Big Swing Sage) This may be the winner of the "best cobalt blue Salvia" contest. The inch long and across flowers are displayed on strong wiry branched stems held well above the handsome foliage.

#617
Salvia x 'Costa Rica Blue' Salvia x 'Costa Rica Blue'

(Costa Rica Blue Sage) A strong grower with substantial, tropical looking leaves, this variety is commonly listed as a variety of Anice Leaf Sage (S. gaurantica). By the way it grows and the season of flowering, we believe it to be a hybrid.

 Our price: $6.50

Salvia x westerae Salvia x westerae

(Hybrid Bolivian Sage) A natural hybrid between two Andean species, S. orbignaei and S. haenkei, this Bolivian native is nicer than either of its parents and deserving of a place in the garden. The large, dark pink flowers are profuse and long blooming. An ideal container plant!
