I ordered 4 salvia this year. All arrived GREEN and VIBRANT--no wilt and no breakage. By far the best plant packing I have seen...but most importantly, all the plants went into the ground and took perfectly.

I love the selection! Please keep scouring the world for new salvias.

Also love the blog!

This is my second year ordering from this fine nursery. The plants are large and healthy, and the choices are spectacular! They were very well packed and shipping was very quick.

Salvia namaensis
(Nambian Sage) One of the most unusual Salvias we grow, with a loose feathery look from it's deeply cut “lyrate pinnatifid” leaves. Small light blue flowers are distributed over the small shrub almost year round. This is an ideal plant for hot areas, and requires little water to survive.  And it has a most pleasant fragrance, reminiscent of some of the California native Sages.

In its native Namibia and on the East Cape, this plant grows in rocky limestone soil.  We find it easy to grow when run on the dry side in a warm spot.

It may be Zone 8 hardy if treated as a herbaceous perennial and mulched in well drained soil.

We are pleased to suggest these other plants, which go well with Salvia namaensis:

#655
Salvia africana-carulea Salvia africana-carulea

(Blue African Sage or Blousalie) A handsome and unusual, densely branched shrub with small, gray leaves, this Salvia puts on a show when in full bloom. The pale blue flowers are born on foot long spikes that cover the plant, and have a large, trumpet shaped green & red bract at their base.

 Our price: $8.00

#381
Salvia africana-lutea Salvia africana-lutea

(Beach or Golden Sage) Young plants are thickly covered with elliptical, woolly gray-green leaves. 2”-4” stems carry whorls of very interesting one to two inch-long bright yellow flowers that age to rusty orange and look somewhat withered when mature, making them both an attraction and an oddity. Blooms mainly in the Winter and early Spring and sporadically through Fall.

Shear back by 1/3 in late Spring to encourage new basal growth. Plants need deep watering at least once a month(when established) and enjoy a loose, preferably sandy, soil.

This is a very unusual plant that we find to be tough and resilient.  Like many plants from the Cape region, apply fertilizer sparingly and have an acid to neutral, well drained soil.

Salvia albicaulis Salvia albicaulis

(White Stem Sage) From rocky, exposed slopes in South Africa comes this easy-to-grow and rewarding Sage. Called White Stem Sage because of the felted white stems, the big green, slightly leathery foliage is dense and attractive in and of itself. But when it starts to display the large, rich blue flowers with two white "bee lines", you will no doubt fall for this lovely plant.

Salvia barrelieri Salvia barrelieri

Salvia broussonetii Salvia broussonetii

Salvia canariensis Salvia canariensis

(Canary Island Sage) A large and truly spectacular Sage that can be the focal point of a Mediterranean garden. The numerous, cloud-like spikes of purple-violet flowers show nicely against the large hairy leaves.

#468
Salvia chamelaeagnea Salvia chamelaeagnea

(Rough Blue Sage) Salvia chamelaeagnea, which grows wild in the south western Cape, is a member of the most diverse plant community in the world, the fynbos (an Afrikaans word, meaning, literally, fine bush, but a dictionary translation would be scrub or shrubbery).

#627
Salvia coahuilensis Salvia coahuilensis

(Coahuila Sage) Such a pretty little shrub! Small shiny deep green leaves clothe this densely branched, mounding Sage form the mountains of Coahuila, Mexico. In a sunny spot with good drainage the sheer number of beet-purple flowers will amaze you.

Salvia fruticosa Salvia fruticosa

(Greek Sage) Most of the dried culinary Sage sold in the United States is Greek Sage. Frescoes on Crete dated to 1400 BC depict this plant, It was used by the Phoenicians and Greeks for cooking and as a medicine. Truly, this is an ancient and beloved companion to mankind.

Salvia lanceolata Salvia lanceolata

(Rusty Sage)  One of our personal favorites because of it’s enchanting flower color (dusty rose), it’s nearly care-free culture and well-behaved, compact growth habit, this evergreen , woody sub-shrub is a must have for any garden with full sun and sharply draining soil that is low in organic matter.

Salvia lasiantha Salvia lasiantha

(Wooly Multicolor Sage) The large wrinkled foliage and white wooly stems of this large, shrubby Sage is reason enough to grow it. But the flowers and wooly bracts are unlike any other Salvia we have ever seen. Starting in the morning as an orange-apricot, they age as the day goes on to a reddish-purple. The bracts are white, with overlays of pink, orange, violet and cream. The flower clusters are large and on display from mid Summer until the onset of cold weather.

Salvia nilotica Salvia nilotica

(Highland African Sage) This Sage is native to a wide swath of the African highlands, from Ethiopia to Zimbabwe at elevations of up to 12,000 feet. We have found it to be a strong growing, hardy perennial that stands some drought.

Salvia radula Salvia radula

(Scrappy African Sage) A fragrant and highly desirable sage for sunny areas. Not well known in the nursery trade, it is a lovely and reasonably hardy plant that should be used more often than it is.

From the plant-rich mountains of South Africa, growing at elevations of up to 6,200 feet, Scrappy African Sage is a herbaceous perennial, closely related to Salvia disermas, which it resembles. The flowers are sturdy and the leaves smell wonderfully.

Salvia scabra Salvia scabra

(Coastal Blue Sage) On the sandy shores of the East Cape in South Africa grows this easy-to-grow, spreading perennial Sage. The lobed, lyre-shaped leaves are a deep green - quite a contrast to most of the Salvias from this region. The flower spikes grow up to a foot above the foliage clumps, sporting small purplish pink flowers that are quite attractive.

So why is it known in it's native region as "Blue Sage"?  Probably because the flowers have a blue sparkle to them in the bright sun.

Salvia somalensis Salvia somalensis

(Somalian Mountain Sage) From high elevation forests in Somalia comes this truly unique Sage. Very large powder blue flowers are profuse and long lasting, making it a focal point in any garden. But the foliage is nothing short of spectacular - furry textured 4 inch leaves curl back gracefully, giving this plant a most graceful appearance.

 Our price: $7.00

#593
Salvia viscosa Salvia viscosa

(Mid-East Sage) Native to the mountains shared by Israel and Lebanon, this tidy sage is drought resistant, warmth tolerant and flowers over a long period of time.

 Our price: $5.50

#702
Salvia x `Savannah Blue’ Salvia x `Savannah Blue’

(Savannah Blue African Sage) Two South Africa Salvias (S namensis and S. repens) are the parent plants of this stunning hybrid Sage. Both of the parents are nice, but this hybrid is spectacular. Dense branching and nicely cut foliage comes from the Namabian Sage, and strong stems with large sky blue flowers comes from the Creeping African Sage.
