Grow Elk Morning Sun as a perennial or annual depending on the degree of winter chill in your area. It looks lovely in borders and containers or as a groundcover planting. You can expect this heat-tolerant plant to attract bees and hummingbirds, but usually not deer. As with other sages, deer likely are likely turned off by the fragrant essential oils of the foliage.

Elk Morning Sun is a Rainbow Sage, which means it is a Salvia x jamensis hybrid developed in the plant breeding program at Flowers by the Sea Farm. Native to Mexico and the American Southwest, Jame Sages occur where the closely related species of Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii) and Mountain Sage (Salvia microphylla) meet, such as in our test gardens or Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains. Their parentage may include other types of sages as well, which creates a broad range of sizes.

The foliage of Jame Sages can favor any of their parent plants. Elk Morning Sun has medium sized, lightly veined leaves similar to Mountain Sage.

Attractive to hummingbirds and honeybees, they are lovely yet tough crosses that include Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii) and Mountain Sage (Salvia microphylla). The word Elk in the scientific and common names of the Elk Rainbow choices indicates that you are getting a sturdy, colorful, reliable repeat performer.
