(Skyscraper Dark Purple Sage) Hummingbirds love Salvia x 'Skyscraper Dark Purple', which is brand new for 2019, blooms bountifully in shade, and is outstanding as a container plant. This easy-to-grow, heat-tolerant sage is the product of an Australian breeding program. It reminds us of the Australian Wish Sages, but is much shorter and has larger flowers.
The length and upright form of this sage's bountifully blooming flower spikes - reaching well above their foliage - lend it a high-rise look. Dark Purple is part of the Skyscraper series, which includes orange and pink varieties. This one's flowers aren't purple, but the overall effect of its dark stems and calyxes combined with blue-tinged pink to deep red flowers suggests a purple look.
The originator of this 2019 introduction notes winter hardiness to USDA Zone 7B, which we are still testing. So, if you try this long blooming tender perennial in your garden, please share results with us.
Limited availability for 2019.
