(Turkish Salt Sage)  The common name for this plants comes from the latin halophila - salt loving.  It is endemic to the central Anatolian basin in Turkey, a very diverse ecosystem of salt steppe and saline lakes.  For the gardener it is a tough, hardy perennial with a most impressive floral display from early summer till fall.

We've found this rare species easy to grow, and quite tolerant of regular watering in well drained soil.  The rosette of grayish leaves give way in the early summer to tall, well branched spikes of two-tone lavender flowers.

This is a lovely Sage, rarely seen in cultivation.  It is used as a medicinal tea in Turkey, and is being actively investigated for its antiviral properties.
