(Woolly Jerusalem Sage) A native of the Crete, long blooming Phlomis lanata is at home in dry, rocky soils worldwide. This is an ideal border plant or groundcover for sunny, dry gardens where winters range from a bit chilly to mild.

Bright yellow flowers supported by thin, fuzzy bracteoles, whorl above leathery, gray-green foliage. Moisture-conserving hairs give the bracteoles and leaves their fuzzy feel and silvery sheen. Oblong and pebbly, the leaves have finely scalloped margins.

Woolly Jerusalem Sage grows throughout Mediterranean lands and is found from sea level up to 5,000 feet in Crete where it is endemic. It makes its home at the bottom of gorges, on coastal cliffs, in woodland clearings of Cypress forests and in low scrublands similar to Southern California’s chaparral.

As with the Salvia genus, the Phlomis genus is part of the mint family (laminaceae) and mixes well in drought-resistant sage gardens. Little watering is necessary after it gets established during its first season. Plant it on sunny slopes to prevent erosion.
